Navigational Leadership

Is your leadership team stuck fighting fires?

If you lead in a complex, multi-stakeholder organization, you know the pattern:

  • Your senior team is capable and committed –>
  • You invest real effort, resources, and political capital in an initiative–>
  • Over time things drift back to where they started

It isn’t a failure of talent or will. The challenge sits inside a larger ecosystem of people, incentives, and pressures that no single mandate controls, and the old industrial playbook of linear plans, top-down authority, and siloed fixes was never built for that.

Navigational leadership is the capacity to see that ecosystem and work with it, rather than react to each piece of it as it arrives.

A two-hour virtual workshop built around your specific challenges

This isn’t a generic curriculum. Before the session, we work with you to name the challenge your team is wrestling with: the ecosystem it lives in, what that ecosystem is meant to accomplish when it’s healthy, and where effort goes in but lasting change fails to emerge. The workshop is then built around it.

In the session, your team will:

  • See why effort hasn’t stuck. Explore where the old playbook breaks down in complex human systems, and what shifts when leaders move from architect to ecosystem steward.
  • Learn the Four Orders of Complexity. Transactional, functional, strategic, and ecosystemic, and why working in only one or two of them produces either efficient processes disconnected from strategy, or inspiring visions that never change daily reality.
  • Design interventions across all four orders. Working together on your challenge, identify what needs to shift at each level, from tools and workflows to strategy, resourcing, and the cross-boundary relationships no single unit controls.
  • Map the timing. Place those interventions across three horizons (now, next, and later) and consider which ecosystem signals will tell you when to move.
  • Leave with a shared language. A common way of talking about the patterns your team has been living inside, and what you’ll do differently.

After the session

We meet with the sponsoring leader to reflect on what surfaced in the session: the patterns, tensions, and possibilities that became visible. Some teams take it from there. For others, it’s the beginning of a deeper look at their ecosystem, and we’re glad to explore that with you.

From the open session

We first ran a Navigational Leadership workshop as an open virtual session for AMI an innovation learning community, with leaders from across sectors each bringing their own challenge.

The recording below gives a feel for the ideas and the way we work. Particpants in the session felt they got real value from it and shared about how their perspective had shifted.

Let’s talk about to bring Navigational Leaderhsip to your organization

If your organization is investing heavily in change that isn’t holding, we’d welcome a conversation about what you’re facing and whether this session is the right next step.
